Gone From My Sight
by Henry Van Dyke

I am standing upon the seashore. A ship, at my side,
spreads her white sails to the moving breeze and starts
for the blue ocean. She is an object of beauty and strength.
I stand and watch her until, at length, she hangs like a speck
of white cloud just where the sea and sky come to mingle with each other.

Then, someone at my side says, "There, she is gone"

Gone where?

Gone from my sight. That is all. She is just as large in mast,
hull and spar as she was when she left my side.
And, she is just as able to bear her load of living freight to her destined port.

Her diminished size is in me -- not in her.
And, just at the moment when someone says, "There, she is gone,"
there are other eyes watching her coming, and other voices
ready to take up the glad shout, "Here she comes!"

And that is dying...

Death comes in its own time, in its own way.
Death is as unique as the individual experiencing it.

The first time I met Edward was at the screen room for the press viewing of " The Winter of 1905".

Edward recognized me as the young actor from Canada and had just made fame by one mini-series ( The Dairy of Dee Dee).

The film was with many UNKNOWN actors and most were our movie buff friends.

We met again and again many times afterwards and Sylvia Chang was aloways with him and they were compiling a project together.

I was very busy doing movies and was pretty "HOT" in teh business.

I turned down many films pffers because they were all cliche movies and I didn't really see any depth nor soul.

I picked a film call " Is Mr. Q Still Alive?" a dark comedy with satirical plot. I made great changes in my acting style and presence. (Including shaving my hair and looked like an retard.) The film was very much Forest Gump and the film was a box office disaster. The audience didn't accept me as an ACTOR and was expecting to see me as my normal persona: Handsome Prince on the White Horse.

I received very little praise on my performance and was depressed for a while.

On the night when the film was pulled-out by the theater, around mid-night, I got a call from Edward.

He invited me over to his house the next day and said there's something he'd like to discuss with me.

The following evening, around 7:00PM I went over to his old house in Taipei on Ji Nan Road. He opened the door with his trademark grin and led me to the dinning room.

I saw a "person" with white shirt went inside and Edward offered me a glass of ice milk. ( Quite rare in traditional Chinese hospitality eitiquette.)

He said to me:" A friend and I went to see your film last night and we were the only 2 audiences." " You did great!" "We were touched by your sincere efforts as an actor !"

"Now, we will start a new film in a month and it will be a film that suits you and your passionate heart for movie."

Then, I felt someone was touching my shoulder, I turned around and saw that white shirt person. It was Sylvia Chang.

Edward smiled again, said:" I like you to play Sylvia's husband"

I laughed! (Knowing there's an age difference... and ...she is such an established actress/director.. and I was....)

Sylvia laughed too!

But, their firm invitation and eyes for my passion in movie moved me into tears. Finally, my efforts did not go to waste nor unnoticed.

The film, later produced by Cinema City & Films Hong Kong and Central Motion Picture Company Taiwan, was made.

The film ended up received more than a dozen nominations in Golden Horse Award and Asian Film Festival and won numerous awards.

This film, remains till this very day, a classic and in a way, epic, in the Taiwan Films history, is still Edward's benchmark piece.

The film is: "That Day On The Beach"

I am David Mao, I played Cheng De Wei in that movie and to me, my most memorable work in my movie career.

Because, I worked with the great Edward Yang.

Oh, throughout the shoot, Edward was wearing the same T-shirt with the inscription on the chest: Haagen-Dazs.

His favorite flavor: Rum & Raisin ( my favorite till this day!)

I can just see him now, spooning Haagen-Dazs and drawing his storyboard on the beach.

This Day, On The Beach, in heaven!
